America's Beloved Doo-Wop Radio Host
Long before the airwaves knew his name, Cool Bobby B was just a kid in a small town with a massive record collection and an ear for the perfect harmony. Growing up surrounded by the sounds of The Platters, The Drifters, and The Five Satins, he knew that doo-wop wasn't just music — it was a way of life.
Cool Bobby B began his radio career spinning records at a local AM station, where his encyclopedic knowledge of vocal groups and his warm, conversational style quickly won him a devoted following. Listeners would call in not just to request songs, but to talk — about memories, about growing up, about where they were when they first heard "In the Still of the Night."
The Doo Wop Stop was born from a simple mission: to keep the flame of doo-wop burning bright for generations old and new. Now heard on SiriusXM 50s Gold, WDJO, and stations across the country, the show has become a beloved institution in the world of classic music radio.
Every week, Cool Bobby B takes listeners on a journey back to the street corners, soda shops, and drive-ins of the 1950s and '60s. With expert commentary, rare recordings, and stories behind the songs, The Doo Wop Stop is more than a radio show — it's a time machine.
It was a Tuesday night in the autumn of 1962 when a scrawny fifteen-year-old with a crate of 45s and a heart full of doo-wop decided that the local AM station wasn't playing enough of the good stuff. So he did what any self-respecting music fanatic would do — he broke in.
Armed with nothing but a bent coat hanger, a flashlight tucked under his arm, and a dog-eared copy of a doo-wop chart he'd clipped from a music magazine, young Bobby B slipped through a side window of WKRZ at eleven o'clock at night. The overnight engineer had stepped out for coffee. The microphone was live. The turntable was warm.
I just wanted people to hear what I was hearing. The Moonglows. The Flamingos. The Five Satins. Music that made the whole world feel like it was spinning in perfect harmony.
For forty-five glorious minutes, the citizens of a sleeping small town woke up to the sweetest doo-wop they'd ever heard drifting through their bedroom windows. Phones rang off the hook at the station. Letters poured in for weeks. Nobody could figure out who the mystery DJ was.
When the engineer returned and the squad car pulled up outside, Bobby B was already gone — out the same window he came in, crate of records under his arm, grinning from ear to ear. He left one thing behind: a handwritten note on the broadcast desk that read simply —
"You're welcome.
— The Doo Wop Stop"
They never caught him. And the legend was born.
